Glasgow could be set back by years
Friday, 09 September 2005

News that one of Glasgow's (and Scotland's) largest companies could be taken over has been met with dismay by the SNP.   If Scottish Power is taken over by a German or other rival, it is likely to be a major setback for the jobs scene in Glasgow.

John Mason commented, "The Council and other bodies have spent a lot of time and energy trying to attract jobs to Glasgow.   But it is always better to have a company headquarters here than only branches of foreign businesses.   Firstly there are higher quality jobs on offer.   Secondly, the spin offs for hotels, restaurants, taxis, etc are much greater with an HQ.   Sadly much of this work will be undone if Scottish Power are taken over.   At the very least politicians should be speaking out against this and it is disappointing to hear so little from Labour politicians when Cathcart is likely to be the area that suffers most."
