Glasgow budget shows up Labour's tax priorities - Labour should drop the bluster and protect the public
Tuesday, 23 November 2010

Cllr James DornanThe SNP today warned Glasgow's Labour Council not to reject the Scottish Government's budget deal.

Glasgow's draft budget shows Labour plan significant cuts to education budgets and the voluntary sector.

SNP Leader in Glasgow City Council James Dornan said: "Labour's Glasgow leader is threatening the people of the city with unnecessary and unfair council tax rises simply to oppose the SNP Government.

"Labour and Gordon Matheson must drop their bluster and accept the responsible proposals put forward by the Scottish Government.

"Everyone is wrestling with difficult financial times and it is essential we get our priorities right.  The SNP's priorities are to keep council tax down, to keep 1000 more police on our streets and to ensure newly qualified teachers are offered jobs. Labour's priorities appear to be putting taxes up and cutting funding for Glasgow's schools.

"Despite the 6% cut in the Scottish Government budget Glasgow has received a good deal in difficult circumstances.  Unfortunately Labour seems stuck to it's plans to punish the people of the city and raise the council tax.

"The SNP has prioritised local education and community safety as part of our funding to local services because we share the priorities of people in Glasgow.  Labour will not be forgiven if they sacrifice police numbers, teachers jobs and a council tax freeze for the people of Glasgow simply in order to oppose the SNP."
