Glasgow SNP working to deliver 3,500 new homes in Glasgow
Tuesday, 01 May 2012

An SNP-led Council will ensure better standards of accommodation and more affordable homes.

img Craig-MackayGlasgow SNP will drive forward the Housing Strategy for the City to provide better housing for Glaswegians.

By utilising the substantial Development Funding delivered by the Scottish Government over the next 3 years, an SNP-led Council will ensure better standards of accommodation and 3,500 new more affordable homes in Glasgow in partnership with our local housing associations. The SNP will ensure that the distribution of Development and HAG funding is open and transparent.

The SNP have many ideas to help the city’s overall housing picture, including stipulating that a set percentage of housing developments contain social rented or affordable housing, looking into the potential use of the Empty Homes Initiative and considering the wider use of Mid-Market rents in Glasgow – which is aimed at assisting more people on low and modest incomes to access affordable rented accommodation. The SNP will also look to extend self-build in Glasgow.

Councillor Craig Mackay, Regeneration and the Economy spokesperson, said:
“Glasgow SNP has spoken to a range of organisations - and over 20,000 people across the city - to better understand their experiences of housing in Glasgow. Our priorities are based on their priorities, such as better standards and more affordable housing, more fuel efficient housing, and ]tougher action to deal with bad landlords.

“An SNP-led Council will work tirelessly to bring housing standards back up to scratch in Glasgow and ensure levels of housing to meet the needs of Glaswegians.

“The SNP also recognises there are continuing problems in the private rented sector in certain parts of the city. We will enforce current, and new, legislation to tackle problems caused by negligent owners and bad landlords.”

“It is also important that housing projects deliver community benefits – such as new jobs or training opportunities – to local areas and these benefits will be something the SNP will work with partners to ensure.

“The needs and priorities of Glaswegians will be the priorities of an SNP-led administration in Glasgow. With an open and more accountable council we can all work to make Glasgow better.”
