Councillor Patricia Gibson, SNP Education Spokesperson, Glasgow City Council, condemned the city’s Labour Group for their callous decision to leave 1,500 pupils in Glasgow with out transport from August.
Said Councillor Gibson: "This is a wholly unnecessary, cowardly and spiteful decision by Labour in Glasgow.
"Unnecessary, because Glasgow City Council currently has a £15.2 million underspend left over from the financial year that has just ended in April. Not a penny of the underspend, or supposed £640,000 saving from this decision, has been earmarked for education. This in a local authority with the lowest educational attainment in Scotland and which spends a smaller share of its total budget on Education than any other of Scotland’s 32 local authorities.
"Cowardly, because this decision was taken in secret, without any consultation and at the end of the school year, leaving little time for staff, parents and pupils to react.
"Callous, because the ruling Labour Group are using Glasgow’s pupils and staff as political pawns in an in an attempt to make out they do not receive adequate funding from the Scottish Government when they fail to spend the resources allocated.
"I will be raising an emergency motion at Thursday’s Council meeting to have this appalling decision reversed."
