First Labour call-in
Friday, 27 October 2006
Under the new Council committee system one of the few powers of non-Executive councillors is to call-in a decision of the Executive. This has the effect of postponing the decision until it can be examined properly. This week for the first time 5 Labour councillors called in a decision. It concerned land near Ross Hall Academy and whether it should be sold off or kept for the school to expand. In the end the DRS Scrutiny Committee voted 7 to 6 to accept the Executive's decision rather than referring it back to them.

John Mason of the SNP commented it was fascinating seeing Labour councillors actually debating something in public … a sight we do not often see! However, more seriously is shows how the PFI/PPP secondary school programme has left many schools with the absolute minimum of accommodation which they need.
