Disability and the Subway
Friday, 24 November 2006
Hillhead Subway stationComments on Glasgow's Local Transport Strategy were due in today (Friday 24th) and today's Executive Committee also saw the approval of the Council's Disability Equality Scheme. Both are wordy documents with a lot of worthy thoughts.

However, one connection between them is the apparent impossibility of making the Subway accessible to disabled passengers. Glasgow City Council has tended to say that the Subway is the responsibility of SPT which technically it is. However, the circle lies entirely within the City boundary and Glasgow should be making a strong case for what it sees as the way ahead.

Because the tunnels are so small, the trains have to be small too. Therefore, there is not enough room to fit in all the necessary equipment and then leave room for wheelchairs. On top of this it has been claimed that lifts could not be used to access some platforms because they are under buildings, etc.

All of this seems to suggest that the present Subway cannot be brought into the 21st Century and cannot be made accessible for disabled passengers. If that is the case, then surely we have to look at a replacement Subway with proper size trains. Then we might be able to start thinking of ourselves as a world class City.
