Declining bus services
Friday, 03 March 2006
Hope StreetOn Thursday 2nd Strathclyde Passenger Transport (SPT) held a seminar in the City Chambers to examine the causes of poor bus services. There was a useful review of the history of the bus industry. But most of the questions and discussion focussed on the big bus companies pulling out of services that are not profitable enough for them. Whereas this may have affected mostly rural bus services in the past, city cervices like the 59 to Pollokshields and Mosspark are now in the firing line. The bus companies are saying they will withdraw services unless they get a public subsidy. But SPT's budget is limited and it cannot go on subsidising more and more services.

The SNP is calling for the Scottish Executive to take the matter more seriously. It is all very well for Labour MSPs to moan about a cancelled bus service but they have the power to introduce new legislation or a franchising system.
