Council slows down on disability rights
Friday, 17 March 2006
The SNP has criticised the Labour administration's slow down on making buildings accessible for disabled people.

Tuesday's Equalities Sub-Committee heard how 600 of the Council's service outlets have been audited. But in 2005/06 only 59 of these are being improved, with some over-running into 2006/07. That leaves 541 premises needing work done on them.

However, no budget is being put in place for 2006/07. There is a vague hope that some funding might be available in January 2007.

SNP Group Leader John Mason said, "This is a scandalous state of affairs. The Disability Discrimination legislation is already incredibly vague, requiring only "reasonable" steps to be taken to ensure facilities are accessible. Glasgow is meant to be a leading public authority and should be setting an example in this field. I accept that 541 buildings cannot be sorted overnight. But to freeze all expenditure in this area for the rest of 2006 is totally unacceptable. Perhaps it will need someone to go to court to force Glasgow's hand."
