Council sees sense on white elephant bridge
Friday, 03 March 2006
SNP Group Leader, John Mason, has welcomed the Labour U-turn on the mad scheme to put a curving pedestrian bridge across the Clyde at the Broomielaw. He said, "We have opposed this bridge for a long time. It was unnecessary and unwanted and now the spiralling costs have forced the Council to see sense and cancel it.

The danger with these "innovative" designs is that they carry a huge risk. Sometimes they work, e.g. the Falkirk Wheel, but very often they do not (or they go way over budget), e.g. the Science Centre Tower, the Scottish Parliament building, and London's own millennium bridge. The next "innovative" design is due to be the Transport Museum. Surely the Council has to reconsider that project too in the light of this fiasco. We should be prioritising major projects and my priority would be more money for refurbishing primary schools rather than over the top new buildings and bridges."
