Council pays £36,000 to help Labour campaign
Thursday, 05 April 2007
Overflowing recycling binsThe Council has revealed that it paid £36,000 to fund a letter from Cllr Steven Purcell to every household in Glasgow. The letter concerned Clean Glasgow and was clearly intended to boost Labour's chances in the coming elections by telling voters what a good job they were doing.

SNP Group Leader John Mason commented, "We support the Clean Glasgow campaign. However, to send out such self-congratulatory material just before an election at taxpayers' expense, is an abuse of public money. Even if there is a legal loophole allowing this to happen, it is clearly a breach of the intention of the law."

He continued, "On 15 February we were issued with clear guidance that we should not use Council facilities to issue publicity which could "be perceived as seeking to influence public opinion or to promote the image of a particular candidate or group of candidates". I am very much of the view that Councillor Purcell has breached these guidelines."
