Committee changes voted through
Friday, 02 June 2006
Tuesday's Policy & Resources Committee saw details of the new committee structure being voted through. Labour easily won the vote by 23 to 2, such is their present huge majority in the Council. But they are still pressing ahead with the plans for a new executive committee where they will win all votes by 15 to 0. Because all opposition councillors will be excluded.

The result of all this is that there is not much enthusiasm at present for committees which are being killed off. As the Council heads towards recess at the end of June, committees are holding their final meetings. This week it was Cultural & Leisure Services and Environmental Protection Services. At these committees the Labour councillors congratulate each other on how well they have done over the years. Yet it seems many of them do not realise that a key part of the democratic process is being lost at the same time.
