Botanic Gardens Call-In
Saturday, 08 September 2007
Botanic GardensThe joint call-in of this decision by the opposition parties was at last heard this afternoon. The key point of contention was that the G1 group would put a large facility including a nightclub in the Botanic Gardens. The meeting lasted two hours and councillors of all parties cross examined the Executive Director, Robert Booth. Stefan King was also in attendance but said nothing. SNP councillors Alex Dingwall, Grant Thoms, and David McDonald challenged different aspects of the plans.

In particular there was concern about the lack of consultation by the Council before the plans went to the Executive Committee. Although Land & Environmental Services said they did not want to consult too soon, they have consulted much earlier in the past, e.g. on bus corridors.

The SNP Group voted that the matter should be referred back to the Executive so that public consultation could take place before a decision was made. However, Labour members pushed through the nightclub plan by 10 votes to 8. Future hurdles for the development will be Planning Committee and Licensing Board.
