Amazing result for SNP!
Tuesday, 08 May 2007
An amazing 22 councillors have been elected for the SNP in Glasgow. Every one of the 21 wards has an SNP councillor. Every resident of Glasgow has an SNP councillor.

The Party had been expecting 15 to 18 to be elected but had put forward 22 candidates. Even in areas like Hillhead where there were strong LibDem and Green votes, the SNP candidate came through on the first count. And in the traditional Labour heartland of Baillieston the SNP took 2 of the 4 seats.

Now SNP councillors have the opportunity to be involved in every community in Glasgow. Residents who have been unable to get any response from sleepy Labour councillors can now go to their SNP representative.

This major step forward from 4 to 22 councillors in the City Chambers is the first stage in the SNP drive forward in the City. In 4 years time we will have the experience, the expertise, and the community relationships to move forward and challenge Labour for the running of the City.

Previous SNP Group Leader, John Mason, said after the count, “I thought getting 21 councillors was maybe more than we could expect, so to get 22 is unbelievable. To have 2 councillors out of 4 in the Baillieston ward, in one of Labour’s safest constituencies, is the icing on the cake. I congratulate each of the new SNP councillors on fighting a great campaign.”
