COSLA, the Labour dominated body which is meant to represent all of
local government in Scotland, has made a very weak appeal to the
Scottish Executive for funds for the Equal Pay Settlement.
In a letter of 7 December to minister Tom McCabe released to the
Convention on Friday 9, Pat Watters (COSLA's President) starts off,
"Dear Tom, Just a short note to update youâ¦" He goes on,
"We will need to speak to you in the later part of January."
The SNP delegation at COSLA, including Cllr John Mason from Glasgow,
criticised the informality and lack of urgency in the
letter. John Mason said, "Given the huge issues at stake
here, the potential for court action and cuts to services, COSLA should
be doing a lot more to emphasise the seriousness and urgency of the
situation. It seems they are too scared to upset the
minister as they are all in the same party. I bet if it was
a Tory minister they would take a much more aggressive
stance. COSLA repeatedly says it is best to take a gentle
approach but repeatedly they fail to deliver."
