Scots Olympic team would boost games bid |

Glasgow SNP has called for Scotland to have its own Olympic team in
2012. A separate team would be a real boost to the City's
chance of winning its bid to host the 2014 Commonwealth Games.
John Mason explained the motion at the full Council meeting on Thursday
22nd. "We know that our competitors will use many arguments
against Scotland hosting the Commonwealth Games. One is
likely to be that the Games would be in the same country as the
Olympics only 2 years earlier. Therefore, being part of the
same team as England in 2012 is likely to be a serious
disadvantage. If we can get the ball rolling towards a
separate Scottish team during 2006, then that would definitely boost
our chances of winning the bid when the decision is made in 2007."
However, the Labour unionists could not stomach the idea of weakening
the UK! In the vote at the end of the debate the SNP motion
was defeated. (Apparently the LibDems abstained, as they
could not make up their minds.) |
