On Tuesday 31st January in Mosspark Primary a Public Meeting was held to discuss the curtailment of the 59 Bus Service which links Mosspark and Pollokshields to the City Centre. The proposal was that the service would be cut off from 7.30 in the evening on weekdays and 6.30 on Sundays. This bus service is the only one which runs through Mosspark and Pollokshields.
First Bus said that they were a commercial company and there were not enough passengers at night to make it commercially viable. SPT said that due to lack of funds, they were unable to subsidise the route.
More than 100 residents from Mosspark and Pollokshields crowded in the small hall to hear from the representatives of SPT and First Bus, and to put their questions to them. Bailie Alistair Watson spoke for SPT and Ronnie Parks for First Bus. Bailie Iris Gibson (SNP councillor for Mosspark) was in the chair, and Councillor Bashir Ahmad (SNP Pollokshields) was in attendance.
There were brisk questioning and comments from the floor. The public do not use the service as much as they wish as the service is unreliable, buses often cold and dirty, often it appears to be the oldest buses which are used. Low floor buses which were promised have not been provided, making it difficult for elderly, disabled and mothers with young children. There were suggestions the cause of the unreliability of the serve was the fact that the route was a long one which arrived on to Drumchapel, and that an alternative service to just the City Centre or even the West End would help the reliability of the service
Ronnie Parks promised that all these matters would taken up and looked at, and promised an improvement in the service There would be a reprieve for 90 days while this is being carried out to see if there is an improvement in the use of the service. Bailie Watson would look into the matter from the SPT point of view to see what can be done.
A public meeting will be called in March to reconsider the situation.
