Recycling targets too low |
|

Wednesday's Environmental Sustainability Committee heard how Summerhill
Primary School in Drumchapel had been built using 20% recycled
material. And this had been achieved without any effort to
do so! In fact the report said that a figure of 27% could
have been achieved without any cost to the Council.
Obviously a higher figure makes long term economic sense and means less
waste going to landfill.
However, despite this encouraging report, the Council is only
planning to set a target of 10% for future projects. John
Mason sits on the sub-committee and accepts there are arguments for not
rushing into unrealistically high targets. However, he
said, "If 20% could be achieved without trying, and we know 27% could
have been achieved at no extra cost, surely a more ambitious target
than 10% should be set now. Glasgow's record of recycling
is poor and if we do not push the barriers back a bit, we are going to
remain a second rate recycling city."
