No progress on Gaelic
Friday, 28 April 2006
The SNP welcomes plans to have a Gaelic medium secondary school in the City. However, they are also asking why all youngsters at school in Glasgow do not at least get an "introduction" to Gaelic. This might include a few phrases, counting to ten, and being able to pronounce and understand some place names.

The SNP's John Mason argued at the Education Committee that the Council would need to introduce a Gaelic policy and this should go beyond the youngsters attending the Gaelic school. "We encourage children to take physical exercise such as hill-walking but they cannot pronounce the names of the hills they are on, let alone know what the names mean. In what other country would this be possible?"

But Ronnie O'Connor, Director of Education, questioned whether Gaelic was a modern language and stated the Council had no plans for Gaelic other than in the Gaelic school itself.
