In his speech in Thursday's debate Billy McAllister concentrated on housing and the failures of Glasgow Housing Association (GHA).
Key points that he made included:
- Overcladding and new roofs are being installed even though they are often not needed;
- Ordinary homeowners are being hit with huge bills for unnecessary cosmetic work that they cannot afford;
- GHA is far more aggressive than the Council was in pursuing evictions for rent arrears;
- GHA's management costs are twice that of other housing associations;
- 30,000 houses are marked for possible eventual demolition over the next 10 to 20 years. These houses need investment but will not get any.
He concluded that GHA has been a failure although some councillors still pretend otherwise (at least in public!).
