Lack of investment for Commonwealth Games |
|

The SNP has expressed disappointment that there is no real commitment to new investment if the City wins the Commonwealth Games bid.
John Mason commented, It would be great to have the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. However, it is clear that the planned expenditure on sports facilities, housing, etc. in Glasgow will happen irrespective of whether the City wins the 2014 bid. It will be disappointing if there is no tangible legacy of having the Games here.
My understanding is that a second 50 metre pool at Tollcross is likely to be the only major permanent addition to sporting facilities. While understanding why such a warm-up pool is required, it would not have been the first choice location for that size of pool when other parts of Glasgow and Scotland would desperately love to have a facility like this. Meanwhile it has been suggested that diving will be in Edinburgh as there is no suitable facility in Glasgow and none is to be built.
Obviously if we have most of the sports facilities in place, then there is no point building new ones for the sake of it. But should we not be considering transport investment if we win the bid? An obvious proposal would be a modern metro system to replace our ageing miniature Subway. While I do welcome the bid and hope very much we win, it is disappointing to see the lack of vision from the Scottish Executive, Glasgow City Council, and Strathclyde Partnership for Transport. These Games are an opportunity which we are in danger of missing.
