Labour says slow housing progress is fast
Friday, 02 June 2006
Red Road flatsGreat play has been made this week by the Labour administration of multi-storeys to be demolished and new houses built. But the SNP is asking why this has taken so long.

It is now several years since the housing stock transfer to Glasgow Housing Association. That whole transfer process was so complex and took so long that officials took their eye off the ball.

In fact many of these multi-storey flats could and should have been demolished years ago. And the residents should already be living in their new homes. But because Gordon Brown insisted on the stock transfer for ideological purposes, the people of Glasgow have suffered in the meantime.

Therefore, we welcome the promise of new housing. But Labour councillors should be hanging their heads in shame that it has taken so long. And while we are at it, what is happening to Second Stage Transfer? That was also a promise at the time of the stock transfer. Local tenants were meant to be getting control of their own housing. Yet, once again the Council, GHA, and the Scottish Executive have failed to live up to their promises.
