Following repeated reports in the press that Cllr Gary Gray had claimed an exceptionally high level of expenses, the SNP's Cllr John Mason has asked the Standards Commission to investigate.
John Mason said, "It was first noted that Cllr Gray had claimed the maximum possible expenses for several weeks.  You might have thought that someone in this position would have double checked to see if he had made an innocent mistake.  However, it was only when the Council had to release cast iron proof of an overclaim to a newspaper that he appears to have repaid the absolute minimum.
This obviously leaves everyone wondering if there are more overclaims still to come to light.  And also whether the overclaims were intentional or not.  The fact that the Council does no real checking on claims and assumes that councillors are honest is naïve in the extreme!  We don't like outside bodies interfering in Glasgow's affairs but if the Labour Group and the Council are not prepared to investigate further, then we are forced to ask the Standards Commission to do so." |
