Funeral of Jamie Williamson |
|
Thursday, 26 April 2007 |
All four of the SNP's current Glasgow councillors attended Tuesday's funeral of Jamie Williamson at Daldowie. Also attending were Nicola Sturgeon, Sandra White and many past, present, and future MSPs and Councillors.
Jamie Williamson was in his seventies and had not been in the best of health in recent years. However, less than 48 hours before his death on Wednesday 18th, he had attended an SNP campaign meeting and taken an active part. Jamie had been a leading player in the SNP in the east end for many years, most recently in Baillieston constituency.
The funeral service combined a celebration of Jamie's life with a clear Christian emphasis. It was remembered how he was extremely well read, had a wide range of interests and views on many topics. He had organised the Baillieston SNP Burns Supper for a number of years, building them into a key event in the SNP calendar.
Afterwards SNP Group Leader John Mason spoke of his own memories of Jamie. "It was in November 1997 that Jamie phoned me up to tell me there was to be a by-election in Garrowhill and he thought I should stand. At first I was reluctant to do so but on reflection I took his advice and that decision has changed the course of my life. So I will always associate Jamie Williamson with my being so heavily involved in politics in general and as a Glasgow councillor in particular."
