The final Council meeting before the elections took place on Thursday. John Mason, who is currently suspended sat in the public gallery while the rest of the SNP councillors took part in the meeting. This shows that the SNP Group is a team and not a one man band like some of the other parties. After the election the SNP will continue to emphasise this team approach.
Amongst the issues discussed at Thursday's meeting were:
- The new Culture & Leisure charity will hold most of its meetings in private. Labour's Councillor Lynch defended this by saying all private companies normally hold their meetings in private. Thus he revealed that Glasgow's museums, libraries, and community centres are to be run by a private company from now on.
- Chirnsyde Community Initiative. The SNP's Billy McAllister asked the administration to apologise to his constituents in Milton for the length of time it had taken to close Chirnsyde. They could clearly have done so years earlier. However, Labour sidestepped the issue and only said they were thanking those who gave evidence.
- The Liberal Democrats said they intend to have councillors who also have additional full time jobs after May. Although the new salary of £15,000 is not great, the SNP questions whether it is right to take this money and have another full time salary and job as well. Normally SNP councillors will either be full time councillors or will have part time work to supplement their income.
- On behalf of all the opposition parties Bailie Iris Gibson thanked the Lord Provost for her work for Glasgow over the last four years.
- Both Billy McAllister and Bashir Ahmad spoke for the SNP motion on Trident. They argued that £25 billion would be better spent on education, health, crime prevention, and local services. As Cllr Ahmad hopes to move on to the Scottish Parliament as the Country's first Asian MSP, this was his farewell speech and he thanked the Lord Provost and others for a great four year's experience in the City Chambers.
- Unfortunately time did not allow for the debate of Iris Gibson's motion. In it she encouraged the Council to do more by way of energy saving. In particular she was critical of wasted heat and light in the City Chambers building.
