A. Ashgill Centre (formerly Chirnsyde) Despite past assurance that the Centre would reopen under Council control, Committee was told that the Centre was to remain closed. Local SNP councillor Billy McAllister argued strongly against this. However, when it went to a vote, Labour's plan to keep it closed won by 12 votes to 5.
B. "New" Children's Units to Close The Council's current policy is to have 8-bedded units so Hollowglen (25 places) in Springboig is to close. Bailie Jahangir Hanif questioned the logic of closing a unit only 7 years after opening it. He also asked what Hollowglen had originally cost but officials could/would not tell him. In any event this is a blatant case of failing to plan long term.
C. Social Work Inspection Agency Report Although a special working group had been set up to consider the Education Commission report, Labour refused to have a working group on the SWIA report. This despite many comments in the report about poor staff morale, etc, etc. Labour said it was too early for a working group! However, they did agree to the SNP request that the matter be referred to the Scrutiny Committee. Jahangir Hanif said, "This issue is so huge and important it deserves much more study than the Executive Committee was able to give it."
