Dornan calls for action on child poverty
Wednesday, 01 October 2008
Children play outside their substandard homesCllr James Dornan, leader of the SNP Group in Glasgow City Council, today commented on the report by Barnardo’s on behalf of the Campaign to End Child Poverty, which found that more than 107,000 children across Glasgow and 98% of children in parts of the East End live in poverty:

Cllr Dornan said: "Whenever a report into poverty comes out, it inevitably shows Glasgow lagging behind the rest of Scotland in terms of exam results, employment, health, and crime.

"In the generations that the Labour Party has represented Glasgow in both Glasgow City Council and at Westminster, as well as the eight years they were in control of the Scottish Parliament, they had the opportunity to make a real difference in raising our children above the abject levels of poverty many of them suffer in the city – but, unfortunately for us, all they have continuously failed.

"Compare the dismal record of the Labour Party to the real results for Glasgow already delivered by the Scottish Government since they were elected; the funding of the M74 link, freezing of the Council Tax and finally under an SNP Government we see the beginning of the second stage transfer of the GHA, whilst at the same time the Labour council in Glasgow are cutting the number of teachers, and Labour in Westminster are doubling the tax on low earners.

"Surely after 50 years it is time for Labour to take the issue of poverty seriously, start to take the real steps needed to end poverty in the city for the sake of all its citizens but particularly our children. They deserve better."
