Council meeting 22nd February |
|
Friday, 23 February 2007 |
Thursday's debate at the full Council meeting covered a wide range of issues. The SNP took the opportunity to review Labour's years in power at all levels of government and the poor state of affairs they have left Glasgow in.
Specific topics included:
- A widening gap between rich and poor,
- Large amounts of sub-standard housing despite the transfer to GHA,
- Congestion on the roads and no major improvement in public transport,
- Environmental problems including litter and lack of recycling;
- Anti social behaviour linked to alcohol use;
- Loss of greenspace.
John Mason opened the debate and also made the final speech. He welcomed the new fairer voting system and pointed out that Labour was in retreat. From having 71 councillors in 2003, they have lost 2 by-elections and now have 69. If they accepted losing one member in each of the 21 new wards they would be standing 58 candidates. But we hear they are only standing 52. This is a real admission of defeat before the election even starts. By contrast the SNP is confident of advancing from 4 at present to 12 or more. In fact the SNP's aim is to have 1 councillor in each ward, thus giving every citizen of Glasgow an SNP councillor. "Clearly we are the Party which is advancing," concluded John Mason.
