City Halls overspends £1.89m
Friday, 02 December 2005

Old FruitmarketThe Policy & Resources Committee on Tuesday 6th is to be asked to approve a further £1.89 million for the refurbishment of the City Halls and the Fruitmarket.

John Mason makes the following points:

  • Culture & Leisure Services have repeatedly underestimated the costs of projects.   This happened with the Easterhouse Cultural Campus and now we are seeing it again.   If we had been told at the beginning that a 15% contingency would probably be needed, we would have been better prepared for this;
  • I wonder if the department has been so focussed on Kelvingrove that it has taken its eye off the ball on other projects;
  • It is hardly news that this was an old building and might have complications;
  • Nor is it news that the construction industry is "overheated";
  • We need a full report on what has happened to this project and more realistic costings in future.
