The people of Milton were outraged. Many locals (including SNP candidate Billy McAllister) started a campaign to prevent this vital commiunity asset being sold off.
Glasgow City Council spent hundreds of thousands of pounds on top lawyers to try and crush the opposition. But the community triumphed. In a David versus Goliath struggle a Public Local Inquiry ordered the Council to back down. They were told that the pitches were to be preserved for all time.
6 years later the Council is still defying the Inquiry - ordered to provide changing facilities - the people of Milton are still waiting. This is an insult to our community.
Milton needs leisure facilities for our young people. They have little to do in the area. They get bored and hang about the streets. Thatâs when trouble starts. Most kids are good but hang around the same street corners as the anti social element because nothing else is put in place. Look at the survey findings on the back of this newsletter to see what this has done to Milton.
In the past our youth were given the kind opportunities I want them to have again today - and it paid off. Kenny Dalgleish, Tony Higgins and Robert Fleck all trained at St Augustineâs. We can produce champions from amongst our youth, and at the same time keep our young people fit, healthy and productive members of society.
Glasgow is bidding for the 2014 Commonwealth Games. I support our cityâs bid but communities such as ours in Milton and Lambhill must see a benefit for our young people.
Billy's pledge for St Augustine's
There is a new primary school being built at St Augustineâs. New state of the art leisure facilities must be included in this development, not just for the school kids, but for the whole community.
I want this to include -
⢠All weather pitches
⢠Swimming pool
⢠Fully resourced leisure centre
⢠Space for pre/ after school care and a variety of clubs
⢠Designated changing rooms for the St Augustineâs pitches
