City ChambersSNP secure swings from all parties in Glasgow by-election

The SNP secured swings from all major parties in last night's Hillhead by-election in Glasgow.

Newly elected Cllr Ken Andrew won the seat after increasing the SNP share of the vote by over 11 points.

The SNP secured a swing of nearly 4% from Labour, 10% from the Lib Dems and 5% from the Tories.

The SNP topped the first preferences in the area for the first time, overtaking Labour.

Welcoming the result SNP MSP for Glasgow Kelvin Sandra White said: "Ken Andrew will be a strong voice for Glasgow Hillhead and I look forward to working with him to make Glasgow better.

"With swings to the SNP from all parties this by-election shows we are continuing to win support across the board from people who want better governance for Glasgow.

"This is an excellent start to the SNP's campaign for May's elections."

Newly elected councillor Ken Andrews said: "This result is more than simply a by election win for the SNP.  This is a sign of the determination of the people of Glasgow to grasp an opportunity for change in their city.  It is a vote for the positive message of the SNP as Glasgow and Scotland move forward."
