The SNP tonight won the Hillhead byelection in Glasgow.

Newly elected Cllr Ken Andrew won the seat after increasing the SNP share of the vote by 10 points.

The SNP won with 44% of the vote having received 32% of the vote on first preferences - a 4percent swing from Labour.

The Lib Dems fell by 11% coming 5th behind the Greens and Tories.

Welcoming the result SNP MSP for Glasgow Kelvin Sandra White said: "Ken Andrew will be an strong voice for Glasgow Hillhead and I look forward to working with him to make Glasgow better.

"This is an excellent start to the SNP's campaign for May's elections and chance for people in all parts of Glasgow to make the city better with a fresh start for the city council."

Newly elected councillor Ken Andrews said: "I'm privileged to have been elected for Hillhead and I'm looking forward to getting straight to work with people across the area and building on the work done by my predecessor George Roberts.

SNP Depute Leader Nicola Sturgeon said: "This result shows that there is all to play for in Glasgow for next May's elections as people across the city take the opportunity to vote to make Glasgow better."
