David Kerr responds to qualifications report - 'There is nothing more important than education'
Monday, 19 October 2009

Commenting on a report by The University College Union entitled Location, Location, Location which puts Glasgow North East at the bottom of a table ranking educational attainment in the UK, SNP by-election candidate David Kerr said: "There is nothing more important than education and if elected, reversing the low rate of educational attainment in this constituency will be one of my top priorities.

"After 74 years in power, this is the disgraceful legacy of Labour that must be tackled.

"I will campaign tirelessly to ensure Glasgow City Council put the money they've been given by the Scottish Government into education, not their own pet projects.

"Instead of increasing investment and taking action to support the ambitions of Glasgow's young people, Glasgow's Labour council are closing down schools, slashing teacher numbers and increasing class sizes.

"Contrast this with the SNP who are making education a national priority.

"Over 30% of the Scottish Government's further education budget is spent in Glasgow - the newly built Glasgow North College in the heart of Springburn is testament to this investment. Our support for apprentices is providing training and job opportunities for young people to give them a secure future and with 3000 new university places announced this weekend and a new funding package on the way, the SNP Government is determined to turn around the life chances of Glasgow's young people.

"Returning an SNP MP at the forthcoming by-election is the only way to send a message to the Labour council that their approach of closing schools, increasing class sizes and slashing teacher numbers is simply not good enough."
