SNP challenge Labour over by-election date - Kerr calls for constituency to have its say

Campaigning in the Glasgow North East constituency today (Saturday), SNP Depute Leader and Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon MSP and Glasgow North East candidate David Kerr challenged Labour to set the by-election
date before Westminster goes into recess on Tuesday.

It is now sixty days since the former MP, Speaker Michael Martin announced he was standing down but still no by-election date has been set.

In contrast, Labour MP Iain Gibson resigned his Norwich North seat on 5th June 2009 and the by-election will be held this Thursday – 48 days later.

SNP confirm Glasgow North East candidate - David Kerr to contest seat

David KerrFormer BBC journalist David Kerr has been confirmed as the SNP candidate for the Glasgow North East by-election.

Mr Kerr's candidacy was endorsed at a meeting of the constituency party this evening (Friday).

Following his overwhelming endorsement Mr Kerr said: "I'm deeply honoured to be given the chance to serve the people of Glasgow North East.

"I'll be working flat out between now and polling day to earn their trust - whenever Labour have the courage to call the election.

"This in area I have a deep affection for. My family first settled here in the 19th century and lived here for generations, and my early years were spent in Duke Street in Dennistoun.

"Labour has held this seat since 1935. They've had their chance and have failed. It's time for a change. Working together, the SNP and the people of this Glasgow North East have got what it takes to see this community thrive."

SNP support doubles in Glasgow North East

ballot boxSNP Westminster leader and party Business Convener, Angus Robertson MP, has welcomed an opinion poll of intentions in Glasgow North East showing that, before a by-election campaign has even started, support for the SNP has already doubled.

The Sunday Times survey of 517 people put Labour on 51% and the SNP on 33%. An ICM poll just 10 days out from the SNP’s famous victory in Glasgow East last year had the SNP on an identical footing.
