SNP would win 37 seats on Glasgow East swing - Gordon Brown's Fife seat would fall to SNP

SNP votes on ballot papersThe swing to the SNP in the Glasgow East by-election would mean that the party would pick up 37 seats from Labour at the next Westminster election says SNP Westminster Leader and party Business Convener Angus Robertson MP.

On the swing of 22.54% the SNP gained in the Glasgow East by-election the party would even pick up Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath – the Prime Minister's own seat.

This would put the SNP 24 seats over the target of 20 seats it has set for the next Westminster election.

Commenting Mr Robertson said: "This is a brilliant swing for the SNP and would deliver the party 37 Labour-held seats at the next Westminster election including the Prime Minister's own seat of Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath.

"Those 37 Labour MPs must now be quaking in their boots at the thought of an SNP which gathers such support in their former heartlands.

"The SNP's target of 20 seats at Westminster is now well within our grasp as this swing shows. More people across Scotland want to see MPs working for Scotland, not acting as lobby fodder for Labour in London.

"This result was a vote of confidence in the SNP Government. It shows more people than ever before think the SNP is on their side and now believe that voting SNP works.

"We are witnessing a tale of two governments - the SNP under Alex Salmond is demonstrating competence, credibility and success, while Gordon Brown's government dithers its way from crisis to crisis as the Labour party's vote disintegrates.

"The SNP's delivery in government and the measures we are taking to improve people's lives, to deliver local healthcare, to freeze council tax and to reduce business rates are resonating with people across Scotland.

"As Labour presides over rising fuel prices and leaves 100,000 Scots out of pocket from the abolition of the 10 pence tax and botched compensation scheme, it is clear that Labour's dominance of Scottish politics is over."
