Mason joins Calton Athletic kickabout - SNP on your side in Glasgow East
Monday, 21 July 2008

Calton AthleticSNP Candidate for Glasgow East Cllr John Mason today joined players from Calton Athletic in Glasgow's East End as he highlighted the potential of the East End of Glasgow as the by-election campaign enters it's last few days.

Mr Mason, who was joined by SNP Depute Leader, Deputy First Minister and Health Secretary Nicola Sturgeon, met the players all of whom are part of the Calton Athletic Recovery Group which supports people with drug and alcohol addition.

Highlighting the success of Calton Athletic and the transformation it has brought into people's lives Cllr Mason said: "The SNP is on the side of people in Glasgow east and Calton Athletic is one of the great projects in this area that is giving people in the East End who may not have had their troubles to seek in the past a new start and a positive future.

"Calton Athletic is a great example of what is being achieved in the East
End through hard work and determination.   Instead of talking down people in
the East End Calton Athletic Recovery Group has a long and successful history of helping people tackle their drug and drink problems in order to achieve their real potential.

"For too long drug addiction has scarred Scotland and Glasgow.

"The SNP Government has delivered an ambitious new drug strategy that will see addicts given the most appropriate support toward a drug free life. We are determined to tackle the problems of drug and alcohol addiction head on.

"As MP for Glasgow East I want to work with organisations like Calton Athletic, organisations that are on the side of people in Glasgow East to bring real improvements to communities across the East End and to show the rest of Glasgow and Scotland that Glasgow's east end is a great place."
