Dr Winnie Ewing, who won a sensational victory in the 1967 Hamilton by-election today visited the SNP's campaign today to meet activists and campaigners and to give her endorsement to the SNP's candidate Cllr John Mason.
Speaking as activists gathered for a weekend of campaigning at the SNP's campaign HQ former SNP President, MP, MEP and MSP Dr Winnie Ewing said: "John Mason has a track record of winning in the East End and of winning in a by-election and I know he can do so again.
"Winning the Hamilton by-election in 1967 made the London Government sit up and take notice of Scotland.
"A win in this by-election will do the same again and force this Labour Government to listen to the people of Glasgow East and of Scotland."
SNP Candidate Cllr John Mason said;
"Winnie Ewing's sensational by-election victory in Hamilton led to real change at Westminster and in Scotland.
"A victory for the SNP in this by-election will force a change in the failing policies of this Labour Government.
"This by-election is a chance for people in Glasgow East to say enough is enough and to send a message to Labour that it's time for action on fuel and energy costs, on road tax and on rising prices.
"A vote for the SNP on July 24th will send that message."
Note:
Winnie Ewing's by-election victory at Hamilton on 2 November 1967, signalled a revival in the campaign for a Scottish Parliament. She sensationally captured the seat from Labour with 46% of the popular vote. In her victory speech, Winnie made a now famous statement which sums up Scotland's international aspirations: "Stop the world, Scotland wants to get on".
