£40 oil bonus for families in Glasgow EastFuel Duty looks set to be a key issue for the Glasgow East by-election as Gordon Brown wobbles in the first days of the campaign.
The SNP wants a fair deal for Glasgow East and is calling on the UK Government to scrap the fuel tax rise and to return Scotland's share of the current fuel tax windfall, equivalent to £40 a week for every household in Glasgow East.
SNP MP Angus Robertson has branded Brown's claim, made at a meeting of Commons Committee Chairmen, that he will look closely at fuel duty in the next couple of weeks a sign of by-election panic. |

SNP Westminster leader, Angus Robertson MP, today (Wednesday) accused the Prime Minister of running scared of a “by-election bloody nose” at Prime Minister’s Questions.
Mr Robertson pointed out that there was no reason for the by-election to be held during the Glasgow Fair holiday, and dismissed earlier claims by Scotland Office Minister, David Cairns, that a writ for the by-election had to be rushed through to ensure the constituency was not without an MP for months.
Speaking after the exchange, Mr Robertson said: “Gordon Brown is simply running scared of another by-election bloody nose.
“There was no reason for the by-election to be held slap bang in the middle of the Glasgow Fair holiday, other than Labour’s blind panic at losing the seat.

Following the moving of the writ for the Glasgow East by-election for 24 July, First Minister and SNP leader Alex Salmond said: "Labour are in a blind panic over the Glasgow East by-election. It is extraordinary and unprecedented for Labour to hold a Glasgow by-election during the Glasgow Fair - they are running scared of the electorate.
"Labour has lost the trust of the people, and are clearly hoping to have a by-election with no voters!
