Salmond on Scottish Power:
"Labour have abandoned their roots and forgotten what they stand for"
Thursday, 15 September 2005

SNP Leader Alex Salmond MP has condemned the Labour Party for abandoning its principles over the future of Scottish Power. Mr Salmond has released quotes from Tony Blair and John Smith opposing foreign takeovers of British companies.

In 1987 Tony Blair opposed the take over of Rowntrees by Nestle, saying then that industrial policy should not put the "folly of the free market before the interest of the nation."

In 1994, when Rover faced a takeover by BMW, John Smith said in reply to John Major: "I deduce from that rambling and defensive answer that the right hon. Gentleman believes that a takeover is a sign of success. Why does he think that that view is not held in Germany, France and Italy?"

Commenting Mr Salmond said:

"Labour have lost their way and abandoned their principles. John Smith was right to stand up in defence of Rover when they faced a foreign takeover. Even Tony Blair once argued for the interest of the nation.

"But, today the Labour Party couldn¹t care less for the Scottish national interest. They have abandoned their roots and forgotten what they once stood for.

"Mr McConnell has simply shrugged his shoulders despite the threatened takeover of Scotland's largest industrial company and the largest employer in Cathcart. Labour's response has been a huge let down.

"Maire Whitehead will be visiting Scottish Power early next week and she will offer the staff and management the full support and backing of the Scottish National Party. We want to see Scottish Power remain as a Scottish company, with all the benefits that brings to Scotland and the local economy in Cathcart."
